Strolling with your group, you listen as a local guide brings the city to life, sharing stories of resilience, culture, and community that echo your own journey.

The scent of freshly pressed tortillas wafts from nearby markets, mingling with the lively rhythm of marimba music that fills the air. Each step draws you deeper into the vibrant pulse of this enchanting city—and closer to a renewed sense of self.
Later, you gather with your group on a sun-drenched terrace, the golden light of Antigua casting everything in warmth. This isn’t a typical workshop. Guided by an expert in addiction recovery, you explore transformative insights rooted in 12-step principles, diving into discussions that spark growth, clarity, and connection.
The open-air setting, surrounded by nature’s beauty and the gentle hum of life, creates a sense of freedom and possibility. Philippa Myers MA, LADC, LPCC

Hi, I’m Philippa, and I’m thrilled to guide you on this transformative journey. My story is one of resilience, discovery, and deep personal growth. Growing up abroad and moving schools four times in four years, I often felt like an outsider, struggling to find my place. As a teenager, I turned to drugs and alcohol, which seemed to offer a sense of connection and calm amidst the chaos. But over time, that sense of belonging unraveled, and my life became increasingly difficult to manage.

In my twenties, I settled in Antigua, Guatemala—a city that would later become a cornerstone of my healing. I became a single mom to two amazing kids while running a second-hand bookstore and café and later a TOP 10 Travel Agent But behind the scenes, I was struggling. My breaking point came when legal troubles and overwhelming stress led me to ask for help in the most unexpected way. That moment marked the beginning of my recovery journey, which has been far from linear but incredibly rewarding.

Today, with nearly 19 years of sobriety, I’ve found joy, purpose, and a profound sense of connection in helping others. I hold a Master’s in Addiction Studies from Hazelden Betty Ford and have spent years working with individuals and families navigating the challenges of addiction. Combining my love for travel, adventure, and recovery, I’ve created these retreats to offer others the tools, support, and inspiration I found on my own path.

I believe that recovery is about more than abstinence—it’s about rediscovering who you are and living a life full of meaning and joy. Antigua, with its rich culture and breathtaking beauty, is the perfect backdrop for this kind of transformation. I can’t wait to share it with you.

Al Updike, MA, LADC

Hi, I’m Al, and I’m honored to join you on this journey. Originally from Sonora, Mexico, I moved to the U.S. at 10 years old, navigating the challenges of a new culture, language, and identity. For years, I turned to drugs and alcohol to cope with these struggles, but my recovery journey helped me rediscover my true self and ignited my passion for helping others heal.

Over the past 14 years, I’ve served as the Director of Outpatient Programs at Hazelden Betty Ford, where I developed innovative treatment models, including the One Counselor Model of Intensive Outpatient Care. I’m especially proud to have launched the Spanish Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program to support the LatinX community and to have created initiatives that make recovery more accessible and inclusive for all. My work has always been about breaking down barriers to recovery and ensuring that everyone has access to the tools they need to thrive.

I earned my Master’s degree from the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School in 2009, following studies in Spanish and Psychology at Carleton College. Before entering the recovery field, I was a chef and business owner, where I learned the value of creativity, connection, and resilience.

I now live in St. Louis Park, MN, with my partner of 22 years. When I’m not working, I love experimenting in the kitchen, playing tennis and pickleball, traveling, and enjoying the theater. I’m here to share my personal and professional journey, helping you discover the freedom, joy, and connection that recovery makes possible.
